Fleetsmart (Pty) Ltd believes in the ‘Pay It Forward’ concept and we are proud to be associated with the Steve Morris Literacy Project – an adult educational platform available to all.
This project was the brainchild of David Tilling and Steve Morris as an outreach mission of their church. They recognised the need for literacy and development in the greater Durban community, and Adult Basic Education English and isiZulu classes were started in 2004. These served to uplift members of the community and enable them to find employment.
The programme was started with the help of Operation Upgrade, an NGO in the field of adult literacy. The Project is a registered non-profit organisation which is funded from public donations. (NPO 050-511)
The Principal of Addington Primary School generously offered after-hours use of classrooms free of charge and today classes operate from 17H30 to 19H30 daily. Total enrolment for 2014 is 112 students (February 2014).
English classes teach practical life skills such as form filling, banking, shopping, HIV/AIDS awareness, going to the doctor or dentist, dealing with bureaucracy and reading to children etc. with positive results so that learners are able to participate in community life to a greater extent and become useful citizens.
